The "enlightment" for me was to start with an simple, ugly waveform and get a nice pad sound out of it in now more then 10 minutes doing things you can understand and reproduce.
For example the pad has not much more then an oscillator with a little modulation and an effect.

Play a few notes, and you will hear a simple sine wave oscillator. This patch is a simple synthesiser which use Trill Bar and Trill Square to control some synth parameters.A new keygroup has been created, mapped to the full key and velocity range.In the Mapping Editor, right-click and choose Create Keygroup > Synth Template. Attack, decay and release can be controlled, as well as modulator gain and frequency.

It can perform FM, AM and ring mod synthesis with one carrier and one modulator, and has arpeggiator and drone modes.
